Pontefract: A lively place to live
Pontefract is one of those seemingly rare places in England that’s both vibrant and lively with plenty going on, yet far from the madding crowd at the same time. If you like the idea of living amongst friendly, outgoing people and with plenty to do right on the doorstep, Pontefract in West Yorkshire deserves a second look.
For one thing, there is property available to suit all lifestyles and budgets, from flats and maisonettes to luxury detached residences. You can choose a town centre location or move to the outskirts, it’s your choice.
In Pontefract, community is at the heart of much of what we do, and this is evident in the multitude of family fun days and events that are organised every year. There is something going on practically every day, from traditional markets to special events unique to Pontefract, such as the annual liquorice festival.
Here is just a selection of events to whet your appetite. If you live in the area these should already be marked on your calendar, and if you’re thinking of moving here what better way is there of learning more about the location than joining in with local goings on.
Armed Forces Day at Pontefract Park - 25th June
Coming up this weekend in Pontefract Park, this is a council organised event to celebrate and recognise past and present members of our armed services who give so much for our protection. The event is expected to draw crowds of thousands with highlights such as a parachute freefall display, a chance to see the West Yorkshire police dogs in action, police helicopters conducting a search demonstration and, for aircraft enthusiasts, a Hurricane flypast.
Proms in the Castle at Pontefract Castle - 25th June
There’s no better venue in which to listen to classical music from the West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra, making Proms in the Castle one of the most popular events of the year. The gates open at 5:30 PM with ticket prices of £6 for adults and £4 for children.
Farm Festival at Farmer Copleys - 26th June
This free event is one of the highlights on the local calendar. If you’ve ever been to a county show, you’ll have some idea of what to expect. The big difference is there is no hefty entrance fee. There will be a dog show including flyball, rural crafts, and traditional fun with the pie eating contest as well as vintage tractors and US military vehicles. And no farm festival would be complete without a Welly Wanging competition. The event opens at 10 AM ready for activities in the main ring that start at 10:30 AM.
Picnic in the Castle at Pontefract Castle - 9th July
Another free event, the picnic at Pontefract Castle is a chance to get out into the fresh air and enjoy the historic surroundings amidst plenty of activities to keep everyone in the family entertained. There will be a local band, a bouncy castle, and craft activities, along with much more. Pack your favourite snacks and treats and head out for some good, old-fashioned family and community time.
Liquorice Festival in Pontefract - 10th July
Packed with fun and frivolity all day long the Pontefract liquorice Festival entertains everyone. There are many children’s and family workshops, with such things as liquorice jewellery making and biscuit decorating. There is also an outdoor market and entertainment provided by street performers, balloon modelling and face painting, along with over 80 market stalls and plenty of refreshments.
This is just a small selection of what’s going on around Pontefract over the next few weeks. It’s a brilliant place to live and, with Enfield’s deep local knowledge, we can help you find your ideal property so you can move in and be part of it.
